RRC's NEBOSH International Health & Safety Diploma FAQs

Can I transfer from the Current Diploma onto the new version?

There are no transitional arrangements so unit passes cannot be transferred.

If you have not yet passed any units RRC will allow our students to transfer until the end of July, subject to paying the additional NEBOSH fees involved. After that date there will be an additional administration fee. Contact us for more information.

If you have already passed Units on the current specification it is probably better to remain on the existing, soon to be old, syllabus. NEBOSH will be offering exams until 2026 (Last Unit IA, IB & IC exams July 2026, last Unit DNI submission date is May 2026 ) and RRC will continue to support our Learners until then.

Where can I sit my exam?

The assessment is undertaken at home and in your workplace so there is no requirement to attend an exam centre. NEBOSH will issue the assessments twice a year for each unit which you will need to complete and return to them. For Unit ID1 NEBOSH are estimating it will take 60 hours to complete and are allowing 6 weeks for Learners to complete and submit the assignment. For ID2 & 3 NEBOSH are estimating it will take 40 hours to complete and are allowing 4 weeks.

  • Units ID1 is assessed by an assignment (in four parts - simulations, workplace based activities, reflective tasks and a research project). Part of the assessment will require learners to undertake some workplace-based activities so need to ensure that they select a suitable workplace/organisation.
  • Units ID2 & ID3 will be assessed by a case study (simulation only)

Assessment Dates

  • ID1 - Assessment release: 8 September 2021, to be completed by 20 October 2021
Thereafter March and September each year
  • ID2 - Assessment release: 10 November 2021 to be completed by 8 December 2021
Thereafter May and November each year
  • ID3 - Assessment release: 13 January 2022, to be completed 10 February 2022
Thereafter January and July each year

How long does the Course take to complete?

NEBOSH advises that it will take approximately 469 hours to complete the course and assessments, see below for a more detailed breakdown.

For Classroom and Live Online courses this equates to 30 days taught (10 for each unit), plus self study and the assessments.

The assessments are structured so that it is possible to complete the course in 12 months, but given other demands on most people's time we would expect 18 to 30 months to successfully complete.

What are the Entry Requirements for the NEBOSH Diploma?

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, the Diploma builds on the knowledge gained at Certificate level. This is not taught in the Diploma but will form part of the assessments, so you really need to have studied the NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent level course before starting the Diploma. All RRC courses will include resources to refresh your knowledge on the Certificate but this is unlikely to be sufficient if you have not studied the course previously.

The Diploma is only available in English language and NEBOSH recommends the minimum standards of English as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 7.0 or higher.

Do I have to start with Unit ID1 of the NEBOSH Diploma?

Yes, knowledge is gained in this unit that is required to complete the Unit 2 & 3 assessments.

What does Gold Learning Partner mean?

RRC are delighted to have been evaluated as a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner, the highest level in the NEBOSH Learning Partner programme.

NEBOSH introduced a Learning Partner Programme in September 2019 which recognises those Learning Partners that provide learners with the best possible learning experience.

All NEBOSH Learning Partners have been classified based on their performance against the programme’s principles which represent global best practice in the provision of course tuition and support. The key principles are:

  • Ensure all learners understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from their Learning Provider.
  • Create a learning environment that is engaging and encourages interaction that is appropriate for the course and type of delivery.
  • Provide accurate course materials and continually update and improve them.
  • Ensure tutors are qualified, knowledgeable, competent and engaging.
  • Give learners feedback on their progress and provide appropriate support.
  • Review course delivery and learner feedback and action as necessary.

Learner Partner Status

Learning Partners can be identified as follows:

  • Gold - greatly exceeds the principles
  • Silver - exceeds the principles
  • Bronze - meets the principles

Can I try the online course before I enrol?

Yes, we offer a demo and trial of one unit on our main webpage. You will need to sign up for this so we can provide access.

Can I pay the course fees in instalments?

Course fees can be paid in up to a maximum of four monthly instalments, see here for more information.

What is the difference between the National and International Diploma?

The National Diploma is based on UK legislation and is recognised worldwide. The International Diploma is based on International Standards and Best Practice and is recognised by employers outside of the UK.

Can I get Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) by completing the NEBOSH International Diploma?

NEBOSH anticipates that this qualification will meet the academic requirements to apply for membership of many professional bodies including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

What is the difference between online, live online, elearning and distance learning?

Live Online is delivered in real time through zoom and is very similar to a classroom course. The tutor will deliver the course with breaks to allow time for group work, exercises and private study.

Online & elearning are just different words for the same thing and mean a flexible self study course delivery with tutor support you can access via email. Distance Learning, means learning at a distance but is commonly used to describe the more traditional paper based study, RRC do provide the complete study text which you can download and study off line thus giving you the option of how you study the course

What educational level is the NEBOSH International Diploma?

It is anticipated that NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals will be accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation at SCQF Level 10 with 48 SCQF credit points .

SCQF Level 10 is comparable to RQF/CQFW Level 6 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What happens if I fail the exams?

You will be able to retake the assessments, but you will need to pay the NEBOSH assessment fee again along with a small RRC administration fee.

Do we have a graduation Ceremony?

Yes, all candidates who successfully complete the NEBOSH International Diploma are invited to attend a Graduation Ceremony. This is usually held in June at the University of Warwick.

Would I be able to get past assessment papers?

NEBOSH will be producing extensive guidance on the assessments and examples. In the longer term past assessments will be available for reference along with examiners reports.

However given this type of assessment previous papers have little value other than demonstrating the approach NEBOSH are taking with the assessment.

Guidance for CSP qualified students

Guidance for CSP qualified students taking advantage of the cooperation agreement between NEBOSH and BCSP

The agreement between NEBOSH and BCSP (Board of Certified Safety Professionals) allows CSP Holders to sit NEBOSH Exams without studying the NEBOSH Diploma course. In practice, whilst there's some overlap in course coverage between CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and the NEBOSH's Health and Safety Diplomas, there's quite a bit that's different. The style of the exams and assignments is also a bit different.

RRC will give CSP Holder access to our online diploma programme (national or international) for a substantial discount. The course includes all the content you'll need, unlimited access to an online tutor and exam fees.

So, what do you need to do?

1. Decide what version of the Diploma you want to do - National or International.

  • National Diploma - based on UK legislation and ideal if you intend to be working in the UK.
  • International Diploma -Based on internationally accepted principles.

Both qualifications are aligned in terms of topics and principles. Both are divided into 4 units (A, B, C, D) and are are assessed in the same way - 3 x 3 hour exams plus one assignment.

2. Download NEBOSH BSCP guide here.

3. Review Part 3 of that NEBOSH BSCP guide.  It contains a mapping document, that maps what you already have (CSP) to the NEBOSH Diploma). If you've decided to do National Diploma, look at the mapping document section 3.7. Otherwise it's section 3.8 you need for international. They use a traffic light system. Anything flagged in red (or "3") means it's probably going to be very new to you.  Anything in green should be familiar to you.

4. Get started - RRC course content follows the NEBOSH syllabus very closely, so that map will work when you study your course. Any problems your RRC tutor is on hand to help.

5. Exam Practice - Prepare for your exams and assignments. Exam revision and preparation is more than just studying. You need to get practice retrieving and applying knowledge under exam conditions. We give you mock exams, past exam style questions
